Yitian Xu, Rob the Real (2023)

Rob the Real is a game I built using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS. The game is an imaginary bank heist in which the player assumes the role of a bank robber. At the start of the game, a player selects items. Each item allows a player to realize specific actions before, during, and after the crime. There are three possible outcomes within the game: 1) you are a successful bank robber, 2) you are a failed bank robber, or 3) you are an artist.

It is left to the player to figure out the specific items and choices leading to these outcomes. But, each outcome changes the nature of the imaginary ‘money’ within the game: 1) for a successful bank robber it is cash to spend within the capitalist system, 2) for a failed bank robber it is evidence of a crime within the legal system, and 3) for an artist it is the ephemeral residue of an artwork and it becomes exponentially more valuable within the system of the art market.
